Locale Settings

You can set default locale, time zone, and character set for the site.

Locale represents a set of user interface properties -- including language and time zone, for example -- that are often related to the user's geographic region. The locale setting determines what language UI text is displayed in. It also determines how dates are formatted, what the character encoding is, and so on. The correct locale helps to make people's experience in the community feel more familiar and comfortable.

Note: Only a subset of the languages listed are actually available in the application by default. For a list of languages in the subset, visit your user preferences page and view the Languages list on the Generale Preferences tab.

When you change the locale on the Locale Settings page, you're setting what is actually the default, or last fallback, among the contexts in which the locale can be set. This is a global default setting that can be overridden at three other levels that are narrower in scope. This global setting is only used when locale isn't set in the other places.

The precedence hierarchy is listed here, with the first given the highest precedence:
  1. Locale chosen in the user's preferences in the application. See How can I set default preferences for things like notifications, time zone, and locale?
  2. Locale set for the user's browser. (For example, a browser set to English will override global settings you make for another locale.)
  3. Locale set at the space level (in Spaces > Settings > Space Settings). See Setting Space Name, Locale, and Allowed Content TypesSetting Space Name, Locale, and Allowed Content Types.
  4. Locale set at the global level (in System > Management > Locale).
