OpenID and Digital Identity

Posted by Dawn Foster on Sep 6, 2007 9:22:37 PM

Jive Software was happy to host the September Portland Web Innovators meeting where the guys from JanRain (Kevin Fox & Kevin Turner) led a discussion about OpenID. We do not support OpenID at this time in our products, but it is certainly something that we have been thinking about. What do you think?  Is it important for Clearspace to support OpenID?

Here are a few highlights from the presentation (edited down to about 15 minutes).

You can also download the entire 55 minute presentation including Q&A (~78MB download).

I think supporting OpenID is very important and should be implemented similar to the LDAP support so the server admin can decide what OpenID servers to take authentication from.

OpenID is a great concept in the world of social networking.  I think certain ClearspaceX installations would benefit greatly from the use of OpenID authentication. Imagine a world where MySpace, Facebook, Livejournal (and other big names you can think of) can all log into eachother's services. Add ClearspaceX to that mix and you start to break down the barriers between communities.

Yes!  Since we have different platforms internally (clearspace, basecamp, and alfresco) we have decided to do openid for all of them.  It would be nice if you guys decided to do this - but I am going to start hacking away and put this in immediately.  I will send the code along when I am done.
