The Clearspace Infomercial

Behind the scenes, Jive has been having some serious departmental competition on the happy hour front. Every three weeks a different department is responsible for spending $100 and being as creative as they can be. There have been some truly amazing happy hours over the last few months. We've seen ice bars, international points of interest, tropical paradises, casinos (ok, that one went over budget), and "bad marketing" to name a few. I have to say that my favorite part of this competition is to see just how creative (and competitive) the company really is. As busy as we all are, each team went all out and really thought through how to make their event fun.

For "bad marketing," the marketing team sent out spam, replaced the header on our Clearspace instance with clip art, plastered the office with "win a car" fliers, and put "sponsored by" logos on everything (the cabinets were sponsored by "wood"). But it had to be the Clearspace infomercial that stole the show. Michael and Chris, stars of the fake spot, pulled it off in one day--finishing from the An Avent Apart Design Conference in San Francisco at 4am.

The video was so good, that some folks visiting Jive asked if we really did make a commercial. As much as we love what Michael and Chris made, I think we'll spare airing it on the USA Network at 3am.

This is my first week back in the office after attending my first Burning Man Festival. My wife and I found it to be a powerful and inspiring experience. It's jaw-dropping to witness the amount of boundless engineering and creativity that people pour massive amounts of energy, time and money bringing to life for a week's time. The desert rockets from barren to the third most populous Nevada city, instantaneously. This year, 40,000 people came with no money or agenda to gather in the ancient lake bed.

It was interesting that when stripped of routine daily responsibility, how people assumed natural roles, like leaders, followers, chefs, or handimen. Even more impactful was how perfectly everything worked with 40,000 people self-managing themselves. Sorta like a real-life tag clouds. The experience did reinforce for me that communities can work amazingly well when given an open, clear space, full authority to manage themselves and when they have a powerful way to reward each other.

On another note, it was surprising to me to read the article that Dave sent to me about the Google guys using Burning Man as a recruiting event. At Burning Man everyone abandons their work ego. No one wants to talk or think about their career. Everyone is equal. For example, I learned later that one guy I drank coffee with had won three Academy Awards including work on Star Wars but when we talked he just shared which art he liked so far. I think it was the massive sculpture of the man on his hands and knees with gasoline pouring from his eyes into a pool of flame. That is, if I remember correctly.

Poor Matt. He rode his bike to work at the beginning of the summer and it's been parked on our bike racks gathering dust...er...attention. Every week, the assortment of Jiver's bikes come in and out but somehow his remains in the same spot. One of the funniest parts of it is that recently he was interviewed by SOA and told them he loved riding his bike to work. Thing is, this year it's been one-way. Ahem. Anyway, somehow the Jivers noticed and left him a little note...

Jive Ski Bunnies

A quick bus-ride later, everyone geared up and spent the whole day snowboarding, drinking and scarfing buffalo wings. Well, that is, except the Marketing guy who's bum knee stranded him in the clubhouse with the laptop (not to mention a wireless router configured to prohibit HTTPS access...hello!).
