Overcoming the community plateau

Hi there -

I was wondering if anyone has any experience successfully overcoming the "community plateau"? We launched about a month ago and have had better than expected activity. We have yet plateaued per se, but it is a worry of mine. We are uniquic in that we are trying to take 110 executives who we previosuly serviced mainly offline, and transition them online. We have 54 members who have signed on, and 30 +/- of those with pictures/complete profiles. The need now is to get those without profile to make theres, and to get the other 50 members who haven't come to the site to join.

Its not like we can reach out to additional/tangential audiences. I think we need to take those that are already up and running and some how get them to help lift us over the plateau.

If anyone has any insight or experience in this, it would be great appreciated!!

How are other companies handling multi-language on their clearspace community sites?

A customer of mine is getting feedback in regards to their localized conversations.

I’m getting a lot of questions from China and Japan about having Japanese and Chinese characters in our jivespace instance. Our English users are saying they don’t want to see a mixed experience (ex: English/Japanese/Chinese) on the same page. How are other companies handling multi-language on their clearspace community sites. Any documents or presentations on this subject would be great.

Anyone care to share how their company is dealing with a global community?

I'm hoping to get insights and perspectives from across Clearstep's member base with this question - customers, non-customers, partners, and consultants.

What can we do to improve Clearstep?

Think about it from the point you first registered, to reading/viewing/commenting on questions, how the communities themselves are set up (internal vs. online collaboration) and any other area you can think of.

Some of the suggestions we received lately include a 'Share your stories' area that was generated by a post on community cost justification (thanks The specified user was not found.) as well as to have a seperate area for posting jobs (see this thread, thanks The specified user was not found.).

But what else? What about for customers and your experience with our Jive communities (right now Clearstep was originally set up separately). We have a few folks from Jive (as well as some community members) working on revamping Clearstep and we would love to hear your thoughts, especially since the community is really yours. Help us help you.

One example of a taxonomy issue is that I'm going to now copy and paste this question into the internal collaboration space since many people either just go to one side of Clearstep or the other.

Nothing is sacred. Also, on the flip side, if anything really jumps out for you that you like a lot let us know that as well.

Growing your community

Question from Jive's Social Business Software roundtable webcast today with Nike, Cisco, and Forrester:

What are some of the best ways to grow your community?

Mike from Cisco commented that 30% of their community traffic comes from Google search and that Cisco literally has done nothing to optimize to drive search. So basically user generated content, and driving it as much as is possible, can play a critical role. Mike didn't get into specific tactics Cisco uses for driving activity but I think this might be a good topic to benefit Clearstep readers.

Any thoughts?

Rewarding quality not quantity

Hi,

3 months into our go-live and we're approaching our next phase of our roll-out. We've been having discussions about how the status part of the system works. Our interpretation is that its all based around the quantity of certain activities e.g. answering a question correctly = 4 points, writing a blog post = 1 point.

We'd like to encourage quality over quantity. We also have concerns about the names, and we're thinking of just using icon's instead of names, and we understand that we could apply status' to specific populations.

Has anyone got any pearls of wisdom for us ?

Who's the Business Sponsor?...or the Platform Owner

Can you be of help???? We are about to kick off an implementation to all our internal employees (50k). Key aims being global collaboration of employees and also an element of communications outwards from out Communications team.

My organisation is entering a healthy debate about where the Business Sponsor/Platform Owner role resides within our organisation..... this is obviously a complex debate and depends highly on the politics/structure of the organisation, but from experience where would an internal rollout sponsor normally reside...and what are the pros and cons....marketing? internal comms? organisational development? elsewhere?

Could you point me to any discussions / blogs / background info etc that could inform our decision?

How do you deal with confidential information in attachments and audit logs?

We have a developer community forum for customers and partners (hereafter referred to as user). It is hosted and moderated by our company, and it is not open to the public, so the user must have a valid account created for them in order to access the forum.

As part of assisting the users, we sometimes will ask for audit logs or example code. Sometimes these logs or sample code will contain authentication information (e.g. URLs, session ID, username, password). How do you handle that, if at all? Is the stance that if the user posts information that could harm them, that is their responsibility?

Taking it a step further, what if the user posts an audit log file that contains customer data (e.g. first & last name, email address, phone number, mailing address, etc.)? This information is "buried" in the attachement/audit log, but it's still out there and could be abused if it fell into the wrong hands.

I know there's the Forum Access Agreement which include clauses like, "You must bear all of the risks associated with your use of the Forum, including without limitation the risk that you will be provided with erroneous information, or poor advice, and the risk that you will infringe upon third party rights." But I am curious to see if others face this situation and if they just let the Forum Access Agreement cover it, or if there are other ways that organizations are handling this situation?

Budgets and headcount for community management

Saw these stats today during a ForumOne webcast-

Average community budget (for companies who have actually carved out a budget):

Commercial - $350k
Non-profit - $50k

Neither of the above include headcount.

In terms of average headcount:

Commercial - 5 FTE's

Non-profits - 2 FTE's

Just wanted to pass on. Survey was from a recent report from the Online Community Research Network titled Online Community Marketing, Growth, and Engagement.
