In Clearstep, you used to use tag groups to segment content within the individual subspaces. Any reason why you didn't with this design?

Hello!

We are just getting our first company website put together using Clearspace SBS and our business leaders really like the layout of the Clearstep website. We'd like to be able to use Clearspace's functionality "out-of-the-box" as much as possible because it does so many things just the way we'd like to use them. The point of this question is the following, the Clearstep website has the user bar at the top, a nice navigational "widget" without borders at the top, and the usual suspect widgets below. Can we achieve the same layout with using the "out-of-the-box" features, or do we need to develop a "custom" home page? Specifically, can we insert a graphic or a flash app (that doesn't have a standard Jive widget border) into the home page using standard administration tools?

A few document-related REST API questions

We'd like to use Jive to publish the official documentation for our software product, and I have a few questions that have come up from trying to use the REST API to make this happen.

1) The createDocument method's documentation says that I need a "documentTypeID" -- where do I go to find a listing of the document types and their IDs? The REST API docs section on the documentService doesn't contain it, and I'm having trouble locating it among the other developer docs.

2) This piece from the createDocument method's documentation on the documentID attribute is confusing to me:

the document ID of the new document. If null a default is created. If not null must start with 'tempDoc-' or the prefix value in 'jive.temporaryDocPrefix'.

Why do I need to manually create a doc ID? The system seems to create one for me if I use the web UI. Also, can this ID be a descriptive string (i.e. something intended to be part of a URL), or is it supposed to be a number?

3) What's the best way to namespace our documents by release so that we can have URLs like "/community/documentation/2.4/<DOCS DOCUMENT>"? Just creating a new subspace under documentation for every version of the docs -- e.g. "2.4", "2.5", etc?

4) Do I have any control over the URL for an individual document? Instead of "/community/documentation/2.4/DOC-2002" I'd like to have something like "/community/documentation/2.4/snmp-api-guide" -- i.e. reflecting the docs internal divisions in the URLs as well as the content.

Do you use online communities for innovation and new product development?

I recently wrote a 2-part article on online communities for innovation and new product development for Visions, the magazine of the Product Development and Management Association. This is an area I'm going to continue to monitor and research. I'm interested in both return of experiences from practitioners and feedback to the article so I may improve presentations and future writing. Both articles, and my research, are more focused on the use of online communities for consumer-led or externally driven innovation than as an intra-corporate tool.

Jive Clearspace 2.5 Wiki Rich Text Editor

Where can I get information about new rich text editor features and functionality? For example, will one be able to inject any html into the page with the wiki syntax gone? In the previous format, not only did the wiki syntax perform poorly, but the editor rejected some very basic html commands. I would also like to find out more about injecting branding into a page? Are columns/tables supported so content can be organized? Etc.

Clearspace backup best practices

Groups vs. Spaces

I am having trouble explaining to others the difference between Groups and Spaces in our community. Maybe this is because I am not quite sure about the difference myself. I can see the concept, and know that there are some things you can do in one and not the other (ie projects), but am wondering how you explain the difference? Is there a guideline of when one would be more appropriate than the other, as well as a list of the differences?

How to upgrade a User from External to full Clearspace user

As it seems I can't have 2 users with the same email address, how do I change a user that was external (just to view documents) to a full Clearspace user? I can only disable the user and not delete it, so I can't remove it and start again either.

Can comments have attachments?

It would be great to be able to attach a document to a document comment rather than just posting text. You can in a discussion reply. Or is the idea to keep comments just short and simple?
