Hi,
we have problem with the wysiwyg editor, because firefox on some pages crash.
For example:
http://www.jboss.org/community/docs/DOC-13242
When user try to edit the page then firefox crash - page is loaded and editor is loading toolbar via AJAX (only Font family, font size). At this moment firefox crash.
I tried to reproduce this problem and it occur on linux Fedora 9 and mac osx v 10.5.6. Firefox version is 3.0.6 (without any add-on).
In attachment I'm including HTML source of page which cause Firefox crash.
Thank you,
Libor Krzyzanek
Libor,
Can you please provide a username/password that we can use for a test login to attempt to reproduce this behavior? Is this a consistent problem or does it only happen some of the time?
Thanks,
Austen
Hi,
here is testing account:
username: JBossorgtest
password - same as username
This problem is consistent and we reproduce it on other machines.
Thanks,
Libor
Libor,
The next time this happens, can you please copy the Firefox crash string and paste that into this case?
Thanks,
Austen
Hi Austen.
We have the same problem on the same version of Firefox...
We have this problem about once every 10 / 15 loadings on different PC.
Ignazio Locatelli
Hi Austen,
what do you mean with "Firefox crash string"?
We try that and firefox only said: "SEGMENTATION FAULT"
Libor
See here for more information on Firefox crash logs:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+crashes
The most likely cause of your problem is a plugin.
Thanks,
Austen
Does not crash when firefox launched with one of:
`firefox -safe-mode`
`firefox --sync`
`firefox --no-xshm`
Do any of you have browser plugins/add ons installed? I spoke with my colleagues about this and it seems that there are some FF plugins that cause the RTE to crash. The problem is noticeably worse on Macs.
I have many plugins, but I verified this with all of them disabled, too.
Are you sure that all of them were disabled? Starting FF in safe mode will disable all plugins, and it sounds like starting it in safe mode resolves the problem. Do you have the crash logs? Does a fresh install of FF have the same problem?
Safe mode does other things besides disabling plugin, and also, the --sync and --no-xshm solve it, without the plugins disabled.
I am 100% sure that all plugins were disabled. Verified on more systems.
Anyway, we would like to have any workaround, if that would be quicker than Mozilla providing bug fix. I think the only way will be to find the piece of JS that causes the FF crash and trying to avoid it... Would this be possible?
First things first, can we get the FF crash logs from your machines?
There are no crash reports... just sigsegv.
Do you want the backtrace?
I've tried about:crashes, but this seems not to work in FF anymore.
Here is my crash report on Mac:
http://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/d4697fcb-703c-475c-88b6-39b562090303
I should mention that I tried editing the referenced document above 10 times using FF 3.0.6 on Ubuntu Hardy and I was not able to generate a crash on my system.
Yes, there are systems that do not crash. E.g. Fedora 11. And sometimes even the same operating systems differ. It can have something in commong with Firefoxes state, or other software, e.g. Gnome, or graphics driver, or anything else that crashing machines have in common.
Note that Libor's Fedora 10 was crashing with FF 3.0.5, and stopped crashing after Fedora update which also included FF 3.0.6.
I used a colleague's Mac to generate the crash logs for that document. We identified the Shockwave add-on as the culprit on his machine. Have you tried disabling this (and restarting FF)?
I've disabled all add-ons, including shockwave, and it seems to work now, other circumstances equal. So for me, it works.
But, on Libor's Mac, it still crashes, even with every plugin and every add-on disabled.
On the Mac, the Crash Reporter application should automatically fire up after Firefox crashes. This application should have a report that includes details on what caused the crash. Does this application fail to fire on Libor's Mac? Also, did you make sure to completely close down FF after disabling all of the add ons and plugin? The problem was not resolved for us until we did so.
Yes, the Crash Reporter had some reports, Libor will post them tomorrow.
And yes, he has terminated Firefox and restarted.
Great, thanks! Looking forward to receiving the logs.
Here is todays morning crash report:
http://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/2d4ca99b-7f93-4fa5-87dc-488c22090303
I disable each extension and plugin and quit firefox.
Libor,
Thanks for submitting this! Unfortunately, this report contains a lot of low level things (stack traces, memory contents, etc) that aren't really of much use to anyone but Mozilla. The information that I'm after is available in report contents windows that pops up when you click the details button. This page shows a nice screenshot of the data that I'm after:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Mozilla+Crash+Reporter
Look for the window entitled "Report Contents."
Thanks!
Austen
This is Marcia from Mozilla - if you give me exact STR (what exactly in the editor you are doing), we can get a bug filed in Bugzilla and try to investigate the crash. Thanks.

Mozilla QA
Hello! Firefox crashes during page load, or, better said, when loading the editor. I guess it is some formatting phase. I see the rolling circle cca. for a second, and then crash, without any Crash Reporter, and console says just Segmentation Fault.
Perhaps we should file a Bugzilla bugreport, at least our comments will not be narrowed in few pixels ![]()
May I use the guest login that is posted in this thread? I would like to see if I can reproduce this bug on the latest 3.1 Beta 3 candidate that we have. I know you have been seeing the crash using Firefox 3.0.6, but it would be great to see if it affects the in development product as well. Thanks.
marcia
I guess you can, or create your own and become JBoss community member :-)
From our internal mail (nothing more stated):
I switched to FF 3.1.0 Beta 2 and it hasn't crashed on me yet.

Libor,
Are you on a Mac? If so, can you navigate to your extensions folder and see if you have a folder named this:
{972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}
Your extensions folder is located in one of these two locations:
~/Library/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/<profile folder>/extensions
~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/<profile folder>/extensions
If so, can you shut down your browser, back up the folder and remove it? This add-on, though not showing in your list, appears to be causing the problem.
Thanks,
Austen
Hi,
I don't have these folders. But I found it in this directory:
/Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/extensions
I removed it, restart Firefox and still crashing.
Libor
Libor,
Are the details of the crash message the same or are they different?
Thanks,
Austen

One of the suggestions on the FF support community is to try creating a new profile:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing+Profiles
Have you reported this problem with FF? A quick Google search shows that this add-on that seems to be causing the problems also shows up in the crash reports for other Firefox users. If you haven't already done so, I'd recommend linking the details of this case on a new or existing ticket with the Mozilla folks, as they are the ones who are the best equipped to help you get this problem resolved:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/
Thanks,
Austen
Taking back. I've upgraded to Firefox 3.0.7, and the editor crashes again :-/ I have all plug-ins (flash, etc.) disabled.
Ondrej,
Please see my response to Libor above. This should be reported to the Mozilla Support community. Do you have the same crash details as Libor?
Thanks,
Austen
Sorry to butt in - but I've found the editor to (periodically) crash my browser too. It seems to happen when I mouse scroll or tab while the editor is loading.
I'm using Ffox 3.0.6 on Windows Server 2K8.
Joe,
Can you provide the details from the crash reporter the next time this happens for you?
Thanks,
Austen
Just seeing this now -this happens all the time so I'll be sure to get some error info for you.
It's happening to other customers we have here as well - I've asked them to do the same thing.
Thanks

This report also contains technical information about the state of the application when it crashed.
I would be willing to bet Firebug might the culprit for that crash - try starting in safe mode or disabling the addon to see if that corrects the issue.
We are a few of us using Firefox (3.0.10) on an internal SBS 3.0 site, and we all suffer from firefox crashes when loading the SBS editor from time to time. I also got the same crash when trying to respond to a jive community discussion, and now on that jboss document.
I have been trying on the above jboss document link, and indeed, it is constantly happening on that document. I have both a Mac & a Vista PC, both with Firefox 3.0.10. I have tried to disable all plugins (notably shockwave as mentioned above), all extensions on both of those systems.
=> At the end of the day, the only time I get the document editor to load without a hard crash is when I start Firefox in "Safe Mode" on the PC
=> For all the other combinations, the Bug Report is sent to Mozilla with that url about 10 times already...
I appreciate plugins/extensions could cause some of those crashes, but here it does look much more like a "basic" Firefox vs. Jive incompatibility.
The Jive editor is loading & using some serious javascript (saw the size of those on the server), that for some 'complex' documents, triggers some normally hidden Firefox problem.
At the end of the day, I have been using Firefox for 5 years or more... and, the Jive web sites are the first to crash on it so brutally. So, Jive has some part in this. And if there were a text-based wiki editor in SBS, that would provide a safe workaround (to avoid the dangerously heavy javascript around).
On the other hand, other browsers seem to support all this heavy editor javascript fine, even IE or Chrome,... so there must be some issue with Firefox => Mozilla.
It is not totally random, there's a reproducible case (jboss document) and I'm sure 100s of the error reports like mine at Mozilla. Is there some activity & collaboration between Jive & Mozilla to get this jboss document to edit without Safe mode? Any expected date?
Thanks
Franck Baron
Just for the record, I did not have a single firefox crash since we upgraded our Jive SBS instance to 3.0.4.
However, this patch is still not applied on this Forum, still running 3.0.2 today... that got me 2 firefox crashes in the past 15 mins on 2 separate discussions.
