"View as a PDF" Not Working

Hi all -

We noticed a problem with the "View as a PDF" function for our documents on Clearspace (v 2.5.4).  The following error message appears when the user clicks on the link:

System Error

We're sorry but a serious error has occurred in the system.

One of several documents in question is: http://community.oen.org/docs/DOC-1097.  Is there a way we can fix this problem?

Thanks,
Larry

Hey Larry,

Can you please send across your log files? You can find them in <Jive Home>/logs/. This will help us better diagnose the issue.

Thanks,

Brad

Hello Larry,

Thanks for that log file. I've reviewed it and found a couple of interesting things.

I need one more chunk of data to reproduce this. Can you please export the document you linked as HTML and attach it here as well? You can do this by editing the document in the rich text editor and clicking the little "HTML" button in the top-right corner of the RTE. Please just copy and paste that in to a .txt document and attach it here. This will help me reproduce this locally.

Thanks,

Brad

Re: "View as a PDF" Not Working

Hey Larry,

I haven't been able to reproduce this behavior in either modern versions of SBS or in Clearspace 2.5.4. Are there any special steps for reproduction that you might have left out on accident? Are there any special modifications or plugins to your Clearspace deployment?

One other thing I forgot to ask was if you could put the contents you pasted here in to a text file then attach that file to this thread instead of pasting it in here. I want to do this to preserve the content best we can!

Let me know and I'll keep digging around.

Cheers,

Brad

Re: "View as a PDF" Not Working

Larry,

Still not able to reproduce! Could you please try making a simple document. Just name the title something bland like "Test Document" and create a simple body like "This is a test body" and see if it still fails. I'm seeing other cases on this version that have to do with some malformed HTML in the body somewhere but, as I said, unable to reproduce.

Thanks,

Brad

Re: "View as a PDF" Not Working

Larry,

I'm having a really hard tiem reproducing this. A couple more questions...

  1. What platform are you running on?
  2. What is your database engine?
  3. Can you check your database's collation, is it set to anything odd or different?

Please let me know.

Thanks,

Brad

Navigate to the Admin Console and go to System -> System Information. Can you copy that table in to a word document and attach it here, please?

Re: "View as a PDF" Not Working

Larry,

Can you or have your admin check

  1. What tomcat's home directory is?'
  2. Does tomcat what read/write permission to /usr/local/tomcat/.fop?
  3. Is there a file called /usr/local/tomcat/.fop/fop-fonts.cache?

Please let me know -- this might fix the issue! I can't remember, is this a new issue or has it been around for a while? Did you, like, upgrade anything recently?

Cheers,

Brad

Re: "View as a PDF" Not Working

Hey Larry,

Please do try creating that and also ensure that the Tomcat user gets permission for that directory -- I think it will likely need read and write permission.

This also looks like it might be a bug on Apache's end. As such, I will look around and see if perhaps upgrading Tomcat (if that's even possible on your end) would fix the issue.

Cheers,

Brad

Hey look at that! It works now, atleast for that document you originally linked!

Check it out and let me know what you think.
