Migrating to Jive SBS from Jive Forums

We are currently running Jive Forums 5.5.25 on a Windows server, but would like to migrate to Jive SBS 3.0.6 on a Solaris 10 server with x86 architecture, while keeping all of our data from the Oracle database we've been using for Jive Forums.  What's the best way to go about making this transition?

Re: Migrating to Jive SBS from Jive Forums

Hi Michael,

I noticed your posting and thought I would give you a few quick ideas.  We have done many migrations of Forums legacy systems into Jive Clearspace and Jive SBS.   I run a consulting practice that is based in the bay area, specializing in Jive related professional services.

In general, there are quite a few factors to consider, including:

  • Changes in the markup language that have taken place between Forums and SBS.  The content will have to be transformed to render correctly in SBS.
  • Changes in the Jive Information Architecture Model that have taken place ( for example, in Forums you cold have multiple forums per category, but in SBS,  you can only have one discussion per space)
  • Changes you WISH to make to your Information Architecture upon migration (lets say, some of your forums are currently sparsely populated, and you'd like to merge them as part of the migration)
  • Engineering a migration process that can move the data over accurately, and within a short production window that you can tolerate (say 4 hours, rather than 4 days.)

Overall, these migrations are not rocket science.  However, I can tell you that there are a few hard-won lessons that we've gained from doing lots of them.

If you'd like to discuss further, I'm happy to chat about it.  Feel free to drop me a line.

Cheers, -Dave

Re: Migrating to Jive SBS from Jive Forums

Hi Michael,

We have a plugin for performing this upgrade: Forums Importer.  The plugin is for Clearspace 2.5 and not 3.0, so you will have to perform 2 upgrades.  However, upgrading from 2.5 to 3.0 should be a fairly quick and easy process.  Look through the documentation on the plugin and let me know if you have any questions about the steps.  Solaris x86 and Oracle are supported by both .0.6 and 2.5.15, so that should not be an issue.

Thanks,

Cory
