Our intranet is top down and our employee community is bottoms up. What I mean by that is the the intranet is corporate information that is broadcast from a high level that is not open to discussion. It is the domain of internal communications, marketing etc. Our employee community is user generated content, groups and knowledge sharing led by the employees. We do have both of these in place and there are links in each that point to each other as appropriate.
