Database Migration methods?

Hello,

Our Test and Production environments are being built on Oracle, however we have a small "POC" environment running on Postgres where some of our business users have made some look-and-feel changes to the environment.  And going forward, we may want to migrate some data from environment to environment (Oracle to Oracle).  I have the following questions:

  1. The POC is running Jive SBS Employee Marketplace 3.0.5 on Postgres, and our Test environment is running 3.0.8 on Oracle.
    1. Is there a migration path to transfer the entire database or just the system-wide settings like the branding or configuration data, from Postgres to Oracle?
    2. Would going from 3.0.5 to 3.0.8 affect this?
  2. Once our Test environment is set up, is there a migration path from Oracle to Oracle?  e.g. from Test to Stage?  or Stage to Prod?  Both in terms of:
    1. The entire database?
    2. Or just select data such as system-wide branding or changes made to one environment that we want to propagate to the others without having to re-do it manually?

Thanks!

Eric Hendrickson

Re: Database Migration methods?

Hi Eric,

There are two places where instance-specific data are stored: the database and the jiveHome directory. The database stores all content and settings for the application. The jiveHome directory stores some metadata and custom themes.

If you wanted to port an SBS instance from one server to another, and change databases in the process, you would need to do the following:

  1. Install a new instance of SBS on the new server.
  2. Copy the entire contents of the jiveHome folder from the old server to the new server.
  3. Run the database migration utility.

Detailed information on how to perform the migration can be found here: http://www.jivesoftware.com/builds/docs/jive_sbs_employee/latest/admin/InstallingOnLinux.html#upgrading_an_rpm_installation.

Hope that helps!

Regards,

Karl

Hi Eric,

If you only want to port over the theme, you can copy the contents of jiveHome/themes to the new server.

Karl

Hi Eric,

Do you have any more questions about this, or can this case be closed?
