hi,
I am troubleshooting some problem where "View as PDF" sometimes does not work for discussions. Right now I am not at a point where I can surely reproduce that problem. Sometimes PDF get generated other times not.
But I found another problem with as PDFs that get generated. The avatar images do not show up in the PDF.
This is a screenshot of the thread:
And this is the PDF (it is also attached).
These are our customized FTLs:
/template/decorator/default/header-favicon.ftl
/template/decorator/default/page-footer.ftl
/template/global/custom-css.ftl
/template/global/include/view-profile-friends-list.ftl
/template/global/people.ftl
/template/global/unauth.ftl
/template/global/user-bar.ftl
/template/global/view-profile.ftl
/template/socialgroup/socialgroup-form.ftl
I attached the log files catalina.out clearspace.log.
best regards,
Nils
I reread one older bug with pdfs that we/you still did not figure out.
http://www.jivesoftware.com/jivespace/message/144901#144901
There is an advice in there to remove the avatars in jiveHome/attachments/cache/. I tried that that did not help. So I did a restart no improvement. Even worse. Now, I can not produce any of PDFs.
The logfiles uploaded before are just after the restart.
UPDATE:
After a short break, PDF are getting generated again. I did not change anything. I just had a cigarette.
This is what the cataline.out says when a PDF is successfully generated:

Hi Nils,
Can you send me your logs as they are now (after PDF stopped working altogether)? Are you using Weblogic? Another customer has run into a similar issue and it was caused by a misconfiguration with Weblogic. Are you still using Clearspace 2.5.17?
Thanks,
Cory

Are you still using Clearspace 2.5.17?
Yes? it is the latetest version
I just tried to create PDFs again, still working, but avatar do not show up.

Hey Nils,
Can you send me all of your theme files. This is located in jiveHome/themes. The Admin Console home page will list the location of your jiveHome directory. I would like to load up your theme locally so that I can isolate whether or not this issue is related to your theme.
Thanks,
Cory
Hi Cory,
We use your svn to store our customizations. Please feel free to use them:
https://svn.jivesoftware.com/svn/ext/customer/lufthansa/trunk/web/src/main/t
hemes/lufthansa/templates
Best regards,
Nils
Hey Nils,
Sounds good. I'll load up your customizations and let you know what I find.
Thanks,
Cory
Hi Nils,
I have confirmed that this is not related to your theme. Does this happen with all content or just discussions? Is it all discussions, or just some discussions?
Thanks,
Cory
Avatars are also missing in blogposts, too.
Documents do not print comments, so it looks like a general "View as PDF".
Hey Nils,
I was able to reproduce this issue by modifying my jiveURL system property. In the Admin Console, go to System > Settings > System Properties and look for jiveURL. Please verify that this is exactly as it appears in your URL bar, without a trailing slash. For example,
http://www.lufthansa.de/online/community
Let me know if this helps.
Thanks,
Cory
Hi Nils,
The jiveURL does not appear to be the problem. Can you see if the server can access itself using that URL? Try performing a wget from the server:
wget https://eteaming.staging.ebase.dlh.de
I will see if the issue could be related to using https.
Thanks,
Cory
Thanks for the reply. If have checked the local call and it is not
successful. The there is something wrong with dns resolution. I am in
contact with the responsible team.
we added the name of the server in the /etc/hosts file
57.20.62.179 vmh-eteaming-staging.lsy.fra.dlh.de eteaming.staging.ebase.dlh.de
Now, it can do a wget, but on the local tomcat port (10500). Port 80 and 443 are the ports of the login server.
$ wget http://eteaming.staging.ebase.dlh.de:10500

Hi Nils,
I have filed a bug for this issue. The bug ID is CS-17471. The filter that is set up to handle converting the document to prepare it for converting to PDF does not handle avatar images. Let me know if you have more questions about this.
Thanks,
Cory
Hi Cory,
any updates? Not having complete PDFs annoys our users.
- Nils
Hey Nils,
An engineer is looking into this issue today.
Thanks,
Cory
Hi Cory,
The avatars are now rendered for threads; but the result is ugly, the text is printed over the picture. This seems to be a beta-status "solution"... :-(
For blogposts and comments on these still no avatars are rendered within the PDF (but maybe this works as designed - at least there is no empty space on the PDF where one would expect the avatar to be rendered).
Regards
Detlev
Hi Detlev,
The avatar in your profile is taller than the standard avatar size, which is causing this problem. I tried testing this locally on a 2.5.18 install, but the image I uploaded was simply made shorter and skinner rather than tall and just as wide. Did you sync your profile photos via LDAP?
Thanks,
COry

This looks like another problem. Shouldn't the avatars be fitted into a firm frame all the time? If you take a look at this thread, your picture squeezed, Detlev's looks tall and mine square. (http://www.jivesoftware.com/jivespace/thread/60131.pdf)
Did you sync your profile photos via LDAP?
No, we do not use pics from the LDAP, we upload them.
best regards,
Nils
Hi Nils,
The avatar for my account shown in the pdf for this case is squished because I uploaded it in an old version of Jivespace when there was a bug in our image cropper. This bug squished newly uploaded avatar photos. Your avatar and Detlev's are actually the same size. It just appears that Detlev's is bigger because of the white background. As for the PDF in your instance, will you see if you can reproduce this by uploading a tall avatar photo in a test account and viewing a PDF in a thread for that account. It's possible that the avatar in the PDF you sent is from an older version of Clearspace when we did not implement proper restrictions on avatar photos.
Thanks,
Cory
I asked the user to update his avatar. I will get back with the result.

Hi Cory,
I downloaded Boris' Avatar and uploaded it again for my own AdminUser. Then I answered the thread by myself and recreated the PDF.
The problem stays the same.
I have attached the uploaded avatar image (bmp) and the new PDF.
Best regards
Detlev
Hi Detlev,
Hi Cory,
I can't see where these should influence the picture created within the PDF...?!?!
So... Now I have tested the same document on out 4.0.3 test upgrade installation, where until today no plugins are deployed. No difference, still the same problem.
So, plugin influence can be rules out...
Best regards
Detlev
Hi Detlev,

This is strange. In SBS 4.0, we force users to crop their avatar to fit to the proper dimensions.
Are you not getting this page when you attempt to upload an avatar image?
Thanks,
Cory
Hi Cory,
I was not talking about uploading the image on 4.0.3, but just using the picture which was uploaded into 2.5.x.
The PDF created with this picture has got the same problem as in 2.5.x.
Best regards
Detlev
Hi Detlev,
I think the issue comes down to a bad image stored in the database for that user (from an older version). In 2.5.21 or 4.0.3, if you re-upload this image to an account, then attempt to View as PDF for a message that has that account, do you still see this issue?
Thanks,
Cory
Hi Cory,
It is the same result as it has been with 2.5.19 (tested with 2.5.21 now). If 4.0.3 needs a crop, OK - but:
The problem obviously is that some images, which are already in the system, do have this issue. We don't have any clue how many of the uploaded avatars lead to this issue. So we need to find the root cause for this issue and after that, a way to resolve this for all affected avatars images.
Best regards
Detlev
Hey Detlev,
Do you have any idea what version that user may have uploaded the avatar image in? It would help if I could reproduce this issue on my end.
Thanks,
Cory

Hi Cory,
??? We have discussed this now for some rounds, and I uploaded the downloaded Boris avatar for my own user, so why should it matter with which version Boris has uploaded his avatar???
And: "video"???
Regards
Detlev
Hi Detlev,
I'm sorry for the confusion; I meant to write avatar image instead of video. I would like to know what version Boris may have uploaded his avatar image in because I still cannot reproduce this issue. Without being able to reproduce the issue, I cannot really tell what is going wrong and how to fix it. We have seen that any images that are uploaded in recent versions does not have this issue. It is likely that this avatar image was uploaded in a previous version which allowed it to get stored incorrectly. If I can reproduce this issue locally, I may be able to find some kind of work around to get this issue resolved.
Thanks,
Cory
Hi Cory,
We had this now really several times, too often: In four out of my five answers from 04.02.2010 on...
I can upload the image in any version in 2.5.x and reproduce it.
Even if this might be dependent on somehting "special" on our side (theme, ...), it is obviously not dependent on the version someone has uploaded the image.
> Without being able to reproduce the issue, I cannot really tell what is going wrong and how to fix it.
I have not written the software, but I think it is quite obvious in which areas at least something might go wrong:
- uploading the image (if it should be cropped automatically at some place or whatever)
- using the image within the PDF (creating the PDF)
If this is code-related - you might instruct us which logger you want to get raised to check what's going in behind the scenes. If the logging is not sufficient, we wouldn't have any problem if you pass one (or two, three, ...) classes with some special extra logging, which we could replace on our STAGING system immediately.
Our theme you find in your SVN, if needed (this should be known).
Regards
Detlev
Hi Detlev,
At the beginning of this case, avatar images were not working. This case was previously closed because we had filed a bug against this problem. What changes took place on your end to get these avatar images working?
Thanks,
Cory
