How do you handle word variances in search?

Right now we're having problems in our search results not displaying word variance results. For example searching for "restored" does not pull up search results containing the words "restores" or "restoring." I know we can add that invidual set to the synonyms list but what should we do to resolve the broader issue?

Re: How do you handle word variances in search?

Hello,

Currently our default search doesn't look for word variation.  If you want to do a "fuzzy" search, you can use the ~ operator.  searching for "restored~" will give you results for "restore" and "restoring".  That, and other search tips can be found here: Search Tips.  I hope that helps.

Thanks,

Kevin

Hi Kevin, I found this thread while looking for answers on a similar issue.  I clicked on your link for Search Tips, but it didn't work (page not found). Can you repost the link or point me to the right spot where it's located?

Thanks!

Bunyan

Thanks Kevin, I see thats the standard help set for search...good refresher nevertheless.  Regarding synonyms, are you aware of any standard synonym sets available that we can copy and drop into our installation?

Re: How do you handle word variances in search?

Hey Bunster,

I'm not aware of any standard synonym sets for search.  Our product uses the Apache Lucene search engine, so if you'd like to learn more about it I suggest going to their documentation, or the LuceneFAQ.  I hope that helps.

Thanks,

Kevin

Re: How do you handle word variances in search?

Kevin-

Thanks for the Search Tips! Good to know. Wonder how I can make this more palatable for our consumers.

As far as building my own Synonyms.  Thanks for those who worked to get the functionality turned back on a couple months ago! You can load Google Analytics in the 3rd Party area. Google Analytics will give you a list of site search terms. If you go through the list you'll probably see words you can create a synonym relationship between. I found this to be especially true with mis-spellings. In other cases I was dumbfounded by the term the consumer used in comparison to the term I commonly use. Lastly, if you belong to a big company you might have a person that works search terms on your global domain. In looking at the terms searched on our product support page in comparison to Google Analytics search returns I was able to focus on what words to decide on making into synonyms. I only wish now that I could group the synonyms so I know what community they pertain to or those that are generally used across the whole site This would help me keep track of synonyms added weekly/monthly.

Re: How do you handle word variances in search?

Hey Mark,

That's good information to know.  I'm not familiar with the 3rd party area, where is this?  It could be possible to intercept search queries and store them for statistical analysis with a custom plugin.  Hopefully, you could tie them into the container your customers are searching in too.  If you'd like to test out moving down this route, I can refer you to our plugin documentation, or get a hold of our professional services team to scope that out for you.  Let me know if you want either of those, or if you have any other questions.

Thanks,

Kevin

Admin Console > Reporting > Settings > 3rd Party Integration

Copy and paste Google Analytics js there.
