Main - What's New Aggregation Issue

 

Having implemented an attempt to build an Internal & External information structure - see details in Re: What's the difference between Clearspace & Clearspace X.

 

 

The problem appears to be that the Main page What's New does not show anything.

 

 

 

 

The provocation may be that I have switched off aggregation of any blogs at this top level (all blogs seem to get automatically set for exposure at this top level). The message 'There are no blogs at this time' may be interfering with the outputting of new content???

 

 

My main assumption is that What's New pages are permissions enabled and aggregated from sub-spaces.

 

 

I've also noticed that Space What's New pages are not shown when only blogs have been set up for the content category types, with the exception of the Main page.

hi Magpie,

 

I believe the problem here is that there is a primary blog specified for the root community. If you remove that primary blog from the root community, you should see the other content rolled up onto the home page.

Thanks, I've done this, and the What's New content is now displaying. The content shown is also correct for the logged on user, in all but one respect.

 

Of major concern is that all the blog posts are being display. I've remove all blog aggregations from the root space, but they are all still showing.

 

 

Do I need to restart the web app - all other space re-sets are taken up without a restart.

 

 

The setting I had with a primary blog selected - is this a bug or a valid consequential effect of having a primary blog?

Yeah, that shouldn't happen. I tested this on my local instance and it does not happen. What version of Clearspace are you running?  When you say they're still showing, where exactly are the they showing?

That's by design, but that behavior may very well change in the future.

Item running 1.4.

 

 

The Main space/default entry page What's New is correctly showing only the content (documents & discussions) appropriate for the user account i.e. only content in the spaces that the user has right to. Good.

 

 

However, all recent blog post from every space is also being shown. Not Good.

 

 

It's as if aggregation is still switched on. I noticed when configuring the various space levels that the Main space seem to have automatically set to aggregate blogs. I had to remove all, or rather the ones that I didn't want published. I have now removed all, but they are still all showing. I've had to add one back as a primary blog, just to prevent the public publication.

 

 

It terms of your last comment about 'by design/likely to change' - I'd suggest that it does. A setting on one feature should not affect another, IMHO they should be orthogonal.

So when you go to /clearspace/index.jspa you don't see blog posts but when you go to /clearspace/blogs you do see blog posts? Is that the problem? If so, there's no way to unaggregate blog posts from the /blogs/ page.  You'd have to write a custom action or create a theme that overrides /template/blogs/view-blogs.ftl.

When you go to /clearspace/index.jspa you do see blog posts that I should not for my user access rights.

 

 

If this does not happen for you on 1.4 then I suppose it's a data problem.

I've still got this problem with blog post appearing on the front page even through I have explicitly removed blog aggregation from the top-level main space.

 

 

All the 'new' content aggregation according to the users access rights work OK, it's just the blog posts that are the problem.

 

 

It is unclear if this is a data/environment screw-up problem, a bug, or a 'feature'.

The homepage what's new content list is recursive, so is it possible that you've aggregated blogs in a community / space at a lower level?

That will be the problem then. How deep does the recursion go?

 

 

In my use case, Re: What's the difference between Clearspace & Clearspace X - How about Clearspace Y? I need to restrict some 'Clearspace' (internal) blogs from 'Clearspace X' (external) users. I would have expected the Main/front page What's New to respect the aggregated blogs settings i.e. non set, none shown.

 

 

 

I did notice that the main root space had all the blogs automatically set to aggregate, I removed them all, but as you have indicated the code rescuers down. I'm concerned about the access control on blog posts, I know that they are implemented as associations and not the same as the space hierarchy.

 

 

 

I don't think I could accept the present behaviour as a feature, even though it goes outside of the Clearspace and Clearspace X use cases. If I've removed blog aggregation on the main space.

I've found a partial workaround, by revoking and not selecting the Global Blog Permissions for Anyone & Registered. I then enabled an internal group permission set to read & create blogs. In this was I was able to exclude blog visibility to external, whilst enabling internal. This was a minimum outcome as it protects potential sensitive data. However, of course, it does not allow me to selectively publish blogs that the space aggregation settings should enable us to do.

OK, I've resolved the issue - all down to configuration. I've managed to achieve selective publishing of blogs that conform to permissions.

 

 

The same access control mechanisms are available for blogs as spaces. It is a little buried; there's a link Edit Blog Permissions on the Administration Group Blog, Edit Blog page. I was able to mirror the same access control configuration as for my spaces. It is a little tedious and potentially problematical to have them get out of step. To prevent unintended publication, I've configured specific blog permissions for each group blog, rather than use the global permissions to read blogs.

 

 

The understanding gained from this issue is that full access control is possible with blogs that will support my Clearspace Y use case, and that the "What's New" mechanism is not the same as blog aggregation configuration.

How do you do this without deleting it?

 

 

I set the primary blog for the main community and now the 'home' page has that blog instead of the aggregate of docs, discussions and blogs.  How do I switch it off?

hi Frank,

 

I'm pretty sure that the setting for the primary blog is nothing more than an extended property on the community so if you go to the admin console --> spaces --> settings --> extended properties and then delete the property 'primaryblogID'.

 

FWIW, this whole magical setting where a 'primary blog' shows up on the homepage and such is much much better in 2.0, I'll talk about it more when the beta comes out.
