I grew up in Peoria, IL, where I swam competitively from an early age through high school. I majored in English literature at Stanford University, and on the strength of 2 CS courses and blissful ignorance I launched a career in software development in '95. I worked on dynamic web sites initially, but soon got into Java development, and have worked with Enterprise Java and Open Source projects (including the Apache Cocoon project) exclusively since 2000. After 17 years of living in California, I moved to Portland in January 2007.
