We've setup Clearspace for a client and have enjoyed using it thus far. Currently, we have one major issue: our users are being overwhelmed by the amount of text displayed for a given discussion, where the replies can be very long.
Whether first time visitors to a particular discussion or full-time users who've just received an alert notifying them of a new reply, they have to scroll through an entire discussion just to see a new reply. They would prefer to see just an expandable/collapsable threaded view of the discussion and not the full replies.
We've looked on the forums and have called support, but we may indeed be the first to encounter this problem.
How can we modify the message-view.ftl in order to just show the Author name and title of their reply in an expandable/collapsable <div> which would expand/collapse via some stupid image button we create?
This feature supposedly exists in Groove and was suggested to us by our client. To quote the client:
"In Groove, the responses to a given question were collapsed and laid out as tabs. On each tab was the title of the response and its author. This allowed users to read entries one by one, starting with the authors they cared to read first. It also made the screen look a lot less intimidating, a key factor for users who only have a few minutes to take out of their busy schedules."
Thanks,
Gavin
We have also had many requests from our community leaders and members for collapsable/expandible message posts and complaints about the amount of scrolling in large discussion threads.
hey Gavin,
Cool feature idea, I think this is exactly what Gmail / Google Groups calls the 'conversation view', they considered it to be one of their bigger innovations in the email part of their product and I think it would be a great addition / option on our threaded views.
I could be wrong (I don't know what you've already been through on the phone with support) but I believe you'll actually want to take a look at modifying /template/forums/thread.ftl, which is where the display of the entire thread happens. You can hide / show messages in the list by using the isRead(user) method available on the message object.
Hope that helps,
AJ
Hi Gavin & AJ -
We've developed this feature and have contributed it back to Jive PS and Bill Lynch. Feel free to contact me if you'd like to learn more.
