Importing Content from Jive Forums 4.x

We have discussion content in a Jive Forums 4.2 instance which we need to import into Clearspace 2.x. I've read the process for upgrading from Forums to Clearspace, which apparently involves installing Clearspace 1.x and importing the content, and then upgrading that to 2.x. But from the documentation, this only supports Forums 5 and later. Having to first upgrade forums, and then install Clearspace and upgrade it is a pretty complex process, and due to security constraints in our production environment, not really practical.

When does Jive plan to implement the import utility in Clearspace 2.x? That would at least remove the requirement to first install Clearspace 1.x to import the data. What would be nice is a more universal import mechanism that could pull content from other systems. Just being able to pull from DB tables and define some simple mapping for the columns would be very useful.

Re: Importing Content from Jive Forums 4.x

Hi,

I do realize that the upgrade process from an older product such as Forums 4.x to CS 2.x can be very tedious but it is done for a reason. In order to be able to account for all possible versions in an upgrade it would take a very large amount of code and the possibilities for problems to occur would be quite high. A universal import mechanism is actually a really good idea, I will see if I can pass that along to someone. It would take some work to implement but I could see it being very useful.

Unfortunately, I don't believe that an import utility is currently planned for Clearspace 2.5. The best upgrade method is still to go from 4.2 -> 5.5, 5.5 -> 1.x, 1.x -> 2.0.x, 2.0.x -> 2.5.  Again, I realize this is quite complicated but for the time being this will produce the best results with the least amount of issues. Thanks.

The 'face of the new enterprise' apparently translates to 'a long, difficult, error prone, migration process'.

Re: Importing Content from Jive Forums 4.x

Hi all,

Actually, I have an update on this situation. There should be a plugin included with 2.5.1 that will allow you to migrate from 5.5.x (latest) directly to 2.5.1. This means your upgrade path will be:

4.x -> 5.5.x -> 2.5.1.

It should be exciting to see how this turns out. Stay tuned!

Re: Importing Content from Jive Forums 4.x

Hi Todd!  It seems 2.5.1 is out. Is the new one-step upgrade you mentioned available there?  Please tell me it IS!

upd: I also noticed the documentation is missing the "Upgrade from other Jive products" section now.

Thanks,

-Eugene

Hi Eugene,

Unfortunately, this feature didn't ship with 2.5.1 as initially expected. It appears that there is still some work being done to make it perfect but it should be out soon. I don't have a specific date for you but it should be soon. Initially it probably won't be released as a public plugin but more information should be available soon. Thanks!

We'd also like to use this plugin-in when it's available.

Hey All,

I thought you might like to know that the forums Importer is now available! You can find it here:

Re: Importing Content from Jive Forums 4.x

Good news Todd! Thanks! Going to give it a try. Hopefully will save some time.

Though the first look shows this procedure does not allow to import from Knowledge Base

We were hoping to do separate migration for KB and for Forums and then merge the data manually.

Regards,

-Eugene
