Updating a User's Profile

In Clearspace 2.5.7, should the UserTemplate.setProperties() method be used to update the user’s profile (phone number, home address, or some custom field) information?

I am talking about progromatically updating the user profile settings under People/Settings/Profile so I think I need to use the ProfileManager.  Still not sure what UserTemplate.setProperties() is for though.
