An interesting thought came up today when discussing the proliferation of Social Groups. How do the group admins who create groups on the community site know that their site is worth their effort? It would be nice to have a stats page that only group admins can see that gives them a dashboard view content utilization.
Some ideas could be:
Some of this information can be pulled out of the SocialGroup object...from the APIs, but I think you get the idea. the nature of this feature request is that not all the data is available via the APIs (at least that is an assumption, maybe prove me wrong?)
It would be nice to also lock this feature down to maybe only be available/calculated for Groups with a special characterstic/extended property.
With the analytics plugin, there seems the possibility to expose some of this information quite cheaply...perhaps this data will suffice for everything.
My thoughts are that the Group Info Widget could be extended to show a link to the Stats page if the user is an Admin for that Group.
Very interested to hear everyone's thoughts on this...ready...set....go! =)
Another item to consider on the reporting side, would be a "potency factor"...which might help the Admin know how "monitored" a group is. Maybe this could be just the # of followers the group has....vs. Members......or maybe there are other means...but thought this would be an interesting piece of visible information that can shown in the stats page that would be very helpful.
Great ideas, Ryan, thanks for sharing them. You're dead on with the analytics module covering much of this information, and it would be fantastic to expose these stats in the end user UI at some point. We've discussed something similar at Jive related to Groups, Spaces, Projects, and Blogs, as well as individual content items. We usually refer to them as 'vanity stats' with the idea being that some of them can/should be exposed to all community members so that they can get a sense of whether something is worth their time. In turn, this could drive improvements by the people authoring or administering so that they create a more compelling destination and experience. What do you think?
I'll reply back with a "dead-on" back at you. That is definitely the "cause" to the "problem". We want people to be able to gauge when something is doing well...vs...bad....and when they should/shouldn't invest time. Sounds like you guys have this feature well in hand for us...please just make sure that we get a tracking number...so we can watch this one through the feature discussions for future releases. =)
Thanks again Greg,
RR
You bet, here is the feature request ID: CS-13618.
Thanks,
Greg
