The State of Community Management 2014

The State of Community Management is The Community Roundtable’s annual assessment of community and community management performance to gauge the maturity of online business communities. This report provides best practices recommendations based on the assessment of 164 companies on the eight competencies of the Community Maturity Model: Strategy, leadership, culture, community management, content & programming, policies and governance, tools, and metrics and measurement. Key findings include:

  • In best-in-class communities, 100% have an approved strategy and 79% have strategies that are operational and measureable
  • 75% of community managers are responsible for community culture––promoting, encouraging and rewarding productive behaviors.
  • ​Communities with guidelines and policies outlining ideal behaviors have better engagement than communities using policies that only restrict certain behaviors.
